HUTTO — The annual Holidays in Hutto event will kick off the holiday shopping season with a new feature – a drone light show and lighting of the city’s brandnew Christmas tree. The tree cost an estimated $65,000 according to a budget item announced on Nov. 2.
“It’s 200 drones doing pretty things in the sky for 18-20 minutes. It’s basically a silent firework show,” said City Manager James Earp, who encouraged people to come out to watch the drone show if for no other reason.
The events start downtown Saturday, Nov. 25 with Shop Small Saturday during the day and the tree lighting ceremony with accompanying entertainment and light show during the evening. The holiday events culminate with the downtown Christmas Fair Dec. 9, though parents can still find something to celebrate with the city’s parks and recreation department’s winter camp for kids.
“This is one of those benefits of small communities I love so much. Our Parks and Rec Department is going to offer childcare over the holiday season when kids are out of school,” Earp said.
The camp is meant to help parents who may still be working though school is out. The camp runs from Dec. 18 through Jan. 2, the city manager added, and kids will enjoy crafts, field trips and more.
