Ducks rally past Northeast in opener

AUSTIN — The Taylor High School boys varsity basketball team started off its 2023-24 season with a bang Friday, Nov. 17 as the Ducks went on the road and knocked off Austin Northeast Early College High School by a score of 68-55.

Under Head Coach Stephen Gibson, the Ducks had to rally from a second-half deficit and did so behind an explosive opener from senior Treos Richardson with a game-high 37 points on 14-of-29 shooting from the f loor, 16 rebounds, five blocked shots, four steals and four assists. Richardson also had multiple acrobatic dunks, including one in the fourth quarter when he attacked the basket and dunked over a Raiders defender to the delight of his teammates and Taylor fans who made the trip down to Austin.

The Ducks also got a double-digit scoring effort against the Raiders from junior Kylon Harris who finished with 11 points on 5-of-11 shooting, seven rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Taylor had a great all-around effort on the night against Northeast from senior Antonio Torres with eight points, 10 assists and four rebounds.

Also scoring on the night for the Ducks were the junior tandem of T. J. Whybrew and Eli Lawrence with six points apiece. Lawrence added eight rebounds and five blocked shots, while Whybrew had four rebounds and three assists in the win over Northeast.

Taylor (1- 0 overall record) had their home opener Monday afternoon hosting Georgetown East View High School and have another home game Tuesday against Salado High School.
