PFLUGERVILLE — The Hutto High School boys varsity basketball team under Head Coach Gant Caraway picked up its first victory of the 2023-24 season Tuesday night as the Hippos went on the road and cruised to a dominant 62-40 win over Pflugerville High School.

The Hippos got off to a very fast start over the Panthers in the first half and did not look back the rest of the way with a huge Hutto lead.

Hutto played great team defense throughout the night as Pflugerville could not get much of anything going offensively until it was way too late in the game. Led by a balanced scoring attack on offense, the Hippos got a lot going in their first victory of the season as senior Zachary Hicks had a team-high 14 points with two three-pointers made, three rebounds, two assists and one steal. Hutto also got a double-digit scoring effort from fellow senior Byron Piper, who had 12 points with four shots made from behind the arc, two rebounds, one steal and one assist.

Hippos junior Cylin Tate had a productive outing against the Panthers with eight points and three rebounds, while sophomore Brian Caldwell had seven points and two steals.

A great all-around effort for Hutto on the stat sheet came from senior Jacques Calhoun with five points, a team-high eight assists, four rebounds and two steals in the win over Pflugerville.

The Hippos (1-1 overall record) next have games this Friday night at Round Rock Cedar Ridge High School, Monday at Pflugerville Hendrickson High School and Tuesday at Cedar Park Vista Ridge High School.

Hutto High School boys varsity basketball senior Dylan Patrick (4) and sophomore Trey Willis (20) defend a shot in the paint Tuesday, Nov. 14 during the Hippos’ 62-40 victory on the road against Pflugerville High School.
