Lady Ducks' inspired comeback falls short

KILLEEN — The Taylor High School girls varsity basketball team continued its start to the 2023-24 regular season Tuesday night on the road against yet another ranked team with the 5A No. 25 Lady Bobcats of Killeen Chaparral High School. Despite a resilient comeback in the fourth quarter, the Lady Ducks had their rally come up just short with a 54-46 loss in a contest in which Taylor trailed Chaparral by over 20 points.

Although the Lady Ducks couldn’t complete the comeback against such a great opponent on the road, Taylor Head Coach Lawrence Bailey said he was very proud of his team for getting back in the game down the stretch.

Taylor was led on the night again in the scoring column by senior Asia Zachary as she had a team-high 12 points on 5-of-12 shooting, seven rebounds, five steals and one blocked shot.

“Asia carried us on both ends,” Bailey said. “Guarding the best player and getting key steals.”

The Lady Ducks also got a solid game from senior Ansley Reed in double figures against Chaparral with 11 points on 4-of-8 shots from the field, two steals and two assists.

Lady Ducks junior Kionayh Rivers had six points and four rebounds, while fellow junior Molli Kennick also had six points with two shots made from behind the arc.

Taylor (1-3 overall record) had a home game Friday night against Jarrell High School and will be on the road Monday at Round Rock Stony Point High School and back at home Tuesday hosting nearby Thrall High School.
