WACO — The Hutto High School boys varsity basketball team put up one heck of an effort Saturday in the Hippos’ season opener against Rockwall-Heath High School at the CenTex Showcase hosted by Midway High School in Waco. The Hippos came up just short in a gritty contest between both schools but fell to the Hawks by a score of 61-57.
Despite Hutto being down 26-14 after the first quarter, the Hippos under Head Coach Gant Caraway fought back. Trailing 52-37 after the third quarter, the Hippos went on a rally and nearly pulled off a huge comeback in the fourth quarter when Hutto outscored Rockwall-Heath 20-9 down the stretch.
Hutto was led by the sharp shooting of junior Landyn Rosow, who had a team-high 12 points and knocked down all four of his shots from behind the arc. The Hippos had nine points from senior Byron Piper, eight points from senior Jacques Calhon, eight points from junior Cylin Tate and seven points from senior Dylan Patrick.
The Hippos (0-1) travel Tuesday night to take on Pflugerville High School in another non-district game, Friday night at Round Rock Cedar Ridge High School, Monday at Pflugerville Hendrickson High School and Tuesday at Cedar Park Vista Ridge High School.
