Late rally not enough for Hippos football

PFLUGERVILLE — The Hutto High School varsity football team had its three-game 6A-District 12 win streak come to an end Thursday night as the Hippos fell 52-29 on the road against rival Pflugerville Weiss High School.

The Hippos, who were held scoreless in the first half and faced a 21-0 deficit to the Wolves in the third quarter, finally got on the board as senior standout quarterback Will Hammond connected on a 37-yard touchdown pass to senior wide receiver Carson LaPlante to finally get this Hutto offense on the board.

Hutto then stared down a 35-7 deficit but inched closer late in the third quarter and early in the fourth quarter. Following a 10-yard touchdown run by Hammond and a successful two-point conversion, the Hippos got a safety and then Hammond again used his legs for a two-yard scramble for a score as Hutto was down just 35-23.

Weiss would then reawake offensively with 17 straight points to take a commanding lead again. However, Hutto got on the board late in the fourth quarter on a 20-yard touchdown pass from Hammond to junior wide receiver Braeton Anderson.

Hutto’s defense again had a rough night with 52 points allowed and now 471 total points given up this 2023 season for Hutto through 10 games.

The Hippos (4-6 overall, 3-2 in district play) will have one of the tallest tasks in the state of Texas next Friday as Hutto will take on the Panthers of Duncanville High School in the bi-district round of the 6A-1 playoffs.

Prior to Duncanville’s shootout loss Oct.

28 to DeSoto High School, the Panthers were undefeated and arguably the top team in the entire nation.
