“We’ve dug ourselves into a hole and we’re having to crawl back out of it,” Hutto head coach Will Compton said post game. “So, every game we play is a playoff mentality and we have to make sure we attack it and make the most of it.”
Hippos senior standout quarterback Will Hammond had himself a night as he torched the Wildcats’ defense with seven touchdown passes to lead Hutto to a pivotal district win. Six of those were thrown to senior wide receiver Alex Green, who had four in the first half alone as Hutto maintained a 2817 lead heading into halftime.
On the night, the Hammond-to-Green connection was a thing of beauty as they had touchdowns of 15 yards, 11 yards, 57 yards, 29 yards, 31 yards and 67 yards. Hammond iced the game on his seventh score through the air, this time coming on a 22-yard touchdown pass to senior wide receiver Carson LaPlante to make it 52-31 midway through the fourth quarter.
The Hippos’ defense also came to play as they kept the Wildcats at bay enough for the offense to continue to put up points. Temple had its first lead of the night late in the second quarter at 17-14 but the Hutto defense stepped up. After the Hippos took a 21-17 lead, senior safety Steven Galindo had a clutch interception to help set up Hammond’s fourth touchdown pass of the first half.
Hutto now holds a 2-5 overall record with a 1-2 mark in district play. The playoff push for the Hippos continues next Friday as Hutto travels to take on Copperas Cove High School.
