St. Mary’s FB finally back in action

The St. Mary’s Catholic School varsity football team will at last be back in action at 7 p.m. on Oct. 13 as the Rams will travel to Waco on Friday night to take on Methodist Children’s Home.

The Rams are coming off two straight bye weeks following a traditional bye on Sept. 29, and a canceled game Oct. 6 against Leander Sterling Classical School, who was unable to field a team for the 2023 season.

St. Mary’s should be ready for this matchup with Methodist Children’s Home as the Bulldogs will give the Rams a very tough district matchup. The Bulldogs, who are 5-1 this year, have scored at least 50 points in all five of their victories this season.

The Rams, who have been without junior standout running back Tyler Zimmerhanzel, will have to lean on their running back tandem of junior Ethan Lively and sophomore Steven Reyes to continue to cause problems for opposing defenses. Lively has scored 10 total touchdowns in five games with 305 yards rushing, while Reyes has rushed for 317 yards and has scored twice.

Also expect junior quarterback Kolbe Barta to get his favorite target, senior tight end Brady Altman, even more involved with the offense going forward this season. While Altman has hauled in 18 receptions for 364 yards and seven touchdowns, he got his first action at running back in the previous game and rushed for 47 yards and two touchdowns on the ground.
