Lady Hippos handle Harker Heights
HARKER HEIGHTS — The Hutto High School varsity volleyball team continued its strong run in 6A-District 12 play on Friday night as the Lady Hippos went up to Harker Heights High School and handled business. In four sets, the Lady Hippos defeated the Lady Knights to pick up yet another district victory: 25-23, 25-21, 21-25 and 25-15 in the fourth set to wrap up a win.
As she has been all season for Hutto as a junior, Auburn University commit Isabella Orton was superb for the Lady Hippos on Friday against Harker Heights as she led the way with a match-high 14 kills, helped set up her teammates with 19 assists, was all over the court defensively with 15 digs and served up four aces.
Offensively, the Lady Hippos got eight kills from senior Charlize Williams, six kills from senior Hailey Bartley and another five kills from junior Lyric Guillory. The duo of junior Macie Atkinson and senior Brittany Haberer helped keep Hutto on top by being top-notch defensively against the Lady Knights. Atkinson had a whopping 28 serves received and a matchhigh 19 digs on the night, while Haberer received 15 serves and had 14 digs of her own.
An underclassman who really stepped up for first-year head coach Jessica Martinez and her squad was sophomore Kyah Cleveland who finished with 14 assists and nine digs, while senior Carolina Vogelpohl added five kills on offense.
Now with a 20-15 overall record and a 6-2 mark in district play, Hutto does not have the tiebreaker for the No. 2 seed with Pflugerville Weiss High School as the Lady Wolves defeated the Lady Hippos back on Sept. 15 in Pflugerville. Following a rematch Tuesday for Senior Night in Hutto against Weiss, the Lady Hippos will host Temple High School this Friday.
