HHS students named National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists

HUTTO — Hutto High School seniors Hannah Kawar and Mitchell Lazzari were named National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists in the 69th Annual National Merit Scholarship Program.

The academically talented high school seniors recognized will now have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,140 National Merit Scholarships worth nearly $28 million that will be offered next spring.

Over 1.3 million juniors in about 21,000 high schools entered the 2024 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2022 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, which served as an initial screen of program entrants. The nationwide pool of semifinalists, representing less than one percent of United States high school seniors, includes the highestscoring entrants in each state.

In addition to the Semifinalist recognitions, HHS seniors Alana Nunez and Richard Ridings were named Commended Students by the National Merit Scholarship Program.

Commended Students place among the top 50,000 students who entered the 2024 competition.

Commended Students are recognized for the exceptional academic promise demonstrated by their outstanding performance on the qualifying test used for program entry. They will not continue in the competition for National Merit Scholarships offered next spring.
