Thrall, Granger XC compete at regional championship

CORPUS CHRISTI — The Thrall High School and Granger High School varsity cross country programs both competed Oct. 24 at the 2A Region 4 championship meet held on the campus of Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi at the Dr. Jack Dugan Soccer and Track Stadium.

For Thrall, the Tigerettes had two runners who made it to regionals with junior Sarah Laurence and senior Avery Koonce in the girls’ two-mile run. Laurence concluded a superb 2023 season and just narrowly missed advancing to the upcoming state meet as she placed 16th with a time of 13:37.82. Koonce, who recently committed to competing beginning next season for the Air Force Academy track and field program, placed 130th out of a large field of 169 entries with a mark of 16:43.31.

As for Granger, both the girls and boys had their teams qualify for regionals.

The Lady Lions entered four runners Tuesday morning as freshman Keeleigh Peace placed 50th with a time of 14:45.00, freshman Eva Ramirez came in 74th with a mark of 15:13.83, sophomore Alexi Montagnino placed 98th with a time of 15:46.63 and freshman Carli Cadena came in 117th place with a mark of 16:14.83.

The Lions had multiple boys compete in the 5,000-meter run as Granger sophomore Kye Wells placed 51st in a large field of 174 entries with a time of 20:33.59, freshman Adrian Lizardo came in 67th with a mark of 21:17.91, junior Isaac Campos placed 73rd with a time of 21:32.15, senior Lucas Matta in 136th with a mark of 24:39.69, sophomore Caden Carpenter placed 138th with a time of 24:46.56, freshman Wyatt Sanchez in 145th with a mark of 25:41.32 and sophomore Evan Youngblood placed 151st with a time of 26:18.17.
