HUTTO — Just earlier this month, the Hutto High School varsity football team was staring at a 1-5 overall record and a 0-2 mark in 6A-District 12. Now the Hippos are 3-5 overall and 2-2 in the district following a 52-31 blowout at home versus Temple High School and last Friday’s 38-33 thrilling road victory at Copperas Cove High School to put themselves in a tie for the No. 4 playoff seed.

Standing in Hutto’s way is Bryan High School (3-5 overall, 2-2 in district) as the Hippos are set to host the Vikings this Friday at 7:30 p.m. in a pivotal district battle that will determine a playoff spot between the two schools.

Hutto saved its postseason chances thanks to an amazing comeback victory last week against Copperas Cove as the Hippos overcame multiple two-score deficits on the road to stun the Bulldawgs.

The Hippos were led by a 415-yard passing effort from senior standout quarterback Will Hammond as he tossed two scores and also ran for three rushing touchdowns, including the gamewinner with just 16 seconds left in the fourth quarter to cap the comeback.

Hammond also got a lot of help from his offensive line as well as senior wide receiver Alex Green and sophomore running back Keilan Chavies. Green continued his stellar season with 13 receptions for 184 yards and one touchdown, while Chavies had five receptions for 115 yards and one score in the victory.

The Hippo defense also rose to the occasion late as senior defensive back Steven Galindo sealed the game with an interception on a hail mary on Copperas Cove’s last play of the game.

On senior night this Friday, look for the Hippos to play arguably their best game of the year at Hutto Memorial Stadium in front of yet another raucous crowd.
