Lady Ducks VB overwhelms Giddings in district battle
The Taylor High School varsity volleyball team rose to the challenge Tuesday night as the Lady Ducks hosted Giddings High School in a pivotal 4A-District 22 match at The Duck Pond. In four sets, the Lady Ducks avenged their previous sole district loss to the Lady Buffaloes with a huge victory, 25-16, 19-25, 25-14 and 25-12. Since the Lady Ducks were able to win in four sets compared to the Lady Buffaloes winning in five sets Sept. 22 when these last two teams met, Taylor has the tiebreaker for first place with both teams having 9-1 district records as of Oct. 17.
Following Taylor’s thrilling comeback victory Oct. 10 in five sets at La Grange High School, the Lady Ducks had a full week to prepare for this Giddings match and they took full advantage of it under first-year head coach Rylee Davis, who had them more than ready for this big match at home against Giddings in front of a packed gym.
Taylor junior Haley Harms again stepped up for her team with a strong game as she had a match-high 16 kills and also led her squad with 20 serves received, while senior Ansley Reed also had a great night against Giddings with 12 kills and five digs.
Throughout the year and into Tuesday night, Taylor continued to get outstanding play from senior Hannah Wamble, who is committed to playing volleyball collegiately for Concordia University Texas in Austin. Wamble had nine kills, 10 digs, two aces and 11 serves received in the win over the Lady Buffaloes. As one of the most productive volleyball players this season in the state of Texas, Wamble has 337 kills (3.2 per set), 106 aces, 363 digs and 404 serves received for the Lady Ducks in 39 matches played.
Taylor sophomore Elena Martinez had six kills, fellow sophomore Makenna Watson was consistently making plays all over the court with 16 digs and 18 serves received, senior Camryn Nunamaker had 20 assists along with six digs and sophomore Peyton Wamble had 18 assists.
Following Friday night’s district home game against Caldwell High School, the Lady Ducks (27-12 overall) will travel Oct. 24 for their district finale against Smithville High School.
