HUTTO — The Hutto High School varsity football team returns to action at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 6 as the Hippos will hit the road north to take on Harker Heights High School.

The Hippos are in need of a victory that will help light a spark and turn their 2023 season around. Following a dominant 66-35 win in the home opener vs. San Marcos High School, Hutto has lost four straight contests, including its last game on Sept. 22 hosting Midway High School for Homecoming. Despite a 27-10 lead for the Hippos over the Panthers in the second quarter of that game, Hutto let turnovers and shaky defense lead to its downfall in a heartbreaking 48-45 district loss that came down to the wire.

Although Hutto has a 1-4 record, this team always has a chance at victory with senior standout quarterback Will Hammond at the helm of this powerful Hippo offense. Through five games, Hammond has completed 115-of-190 passes with a whopping 1,880 yards through the air with 15 touchdown passes, only three interceptions, 463 yards rushing and 10 scores on the ground.

Harker Heights has not been the team it has usually been in previous seasons as the Knights made a trip to the regional finals in 2022 and finished with a 12-2 record. This team is 3-3 out of the gate and following a blowout loss to Pflugerville Weiss High School in the District 12-6A opener, the Knights were able to get a 28-14 win on the road last Friday at Midway in Waco.
