Hippos football on hiatus

HUTTO — The Hutto High School varsity football team gets a much-needed break from game action this week as the Hippos are now 1-4 on the season following a down-to-thewire 45-42 loss at home vs. Midway High School on Homecoming.

As a team, Hutto had a superb performance on offense, especially with the ground game running all over the field. Hippos sophomore running back continued his impressive first season on varsity with 14 carries for 123 yards and two touchdowns, senior standout quarterback Will Hammond showed off his ability as a dual-threat quarterback with 20 carries for 102 yards and one score on the ground and junior wide receiver Braeton Anderson had four carries for 64 yards and one touchdown.

Hammond also had another great game throwing the ball as he completed 26-of-41 passes for 346 yards and two touchdowns through the air. Hutto senior wide receiver Alex Green (who was named the Homecoming king) had eight receptions for 125 yards and one touchdown while senior running back Dennis Benavides caught a screen pass from Hammond and scored from 33 yards out.

Although the Hutto defense played pretty well last week in the first half to hold Midway a 27-10 deficit late in the first half, the Hippos let this game get away from them in the second half as the Panthers were able to move the ball up and down the field. Even with Hutto’s powerful offense, the Hippos really hurt themselves in the second half with two fumbles inside the Panthers’ 20-yard line that proved very costly.

Hutto will hit the road at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 6 as the Hippos are set to take on district foe Harker Heights High School.
