Rest for the Rams

The St. Mary’s Catholic School varsity football team is getting a muchneeded rest from six-man game action this week as the Rams have reached their bye week.

Under head coach Rick Cobia, the Rams have entered their week off with a 2-3 overall record but are on a three-game losing streak.

St. Mary’s is coming off a 61-41 loss in its first road game of the season at Community Christian School up in Mineral Wells. The Rams were without junior standout running back Tyler Zimmerhanzel, who was inactive with an injury. Zimmerhanzel was a force to be reckoned with through the first four games of the season as he had 55 carries for 438 yards and nine touchdowns on the ground to go along with 18 tackles and two interceptions on defense.

With Zimmerhanzel out, Rams senior tight end Brady Altman took on a role to have him even more involved in the offense. In addition to hauling in five receptions for 81 yards and one touchdown catch from junior quarterback Kolbe Barta, Altman had six carries for 47 yards and two scores on the ground. Junior running back Ethan Lively was effective on the ground with 76 yards on 10 carries for one score, while sophomore running back Steven Reyes stepped up with Zimmerhanzel out with 70 yards on 16 touches.

St. Mary’s will return home to Taylor Memorial Field at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 6 looking to get back in the win column when the Rams host Leander Sterling Classical School.
