Lady Hippos earn gritty win at Temple
TEMPLE — The Hutto High School varsity volleyball team fought extremely hard Sept. 19 as the Lady Hippos came from behind against Temple High School and won a thrilling district match on the road. Despite being down 1-2, the Lady Hippos refused to quit on Tuesday night and won in five sets over the Lady Wildcats: 26-24, 25-27, 21-25, 25-8 and 15-12.
“The team’s performance in the fourth and fifth sets was truly impressive, demonstrating their resilience and mental toughness,” Hutto Head Coach Jessica Martinez said. “Winning on the road while facing a deficit is no easy feat, which is why this victory speaks to the team’s character and skill.”
The Lady Hippos continue to get great play from junior Isabella Orton, senior Charlize Williams, senior Cori Babb, senior Hailey Bartley, junior Macie Atkinson, senior Jayanaa Davis, junior Lyric Guillory, senior Andreani Garcis and others on this talented Hutto roster. Their collective effort continues to show on the court as Hutto looks to return to the playoffs and make a run.
Hutto has a huge match with Midway High School (Waco) on Friday night that will be pivotal in the race for a District 12-6A championship. The Lady Hippos enter with a 3-1 district record, while the Pantherettes are the only team in the district with an undefeated record at 3-0.
“With Homecoming week upon us, I’ve been reminding the girls to remain focused and not get caught up in the excitement,” Martinez said. “It’s crucial to take it one game at a time and stay disciplined, especially for the upcoming match against Midway. It’s important to execute the game plan, play smart and minimize mistakes. Teamwork and trust are key to defeating a formidable opponent like Midway. Although playing at home is advantageous, it’s ultimately up to the players to unite and give their best performance.
Following the highly anticipated match vs. Midway on Friday, the Lady Hippos will remain home at 6:30 p.m. this Tuesday as Hutto hosts district foe Copperas Cove High School.
