Lions football batters Bruni

KENEDY — The Granger High School varsity football team took care of business on Thursday night as the Lions got off to a massive early lead before cruising to a 57-30 victory over Bruni High School. This contest against the Badgers was played at neutral site Kenedy High School.

After Granger got on the board first with a 43-yard field goal by junior Jose Valverde and a one-yard touchdown run from sophomore running back Joseph Sifuentes, the Lions really got to scoring in the second quarter. Senior quarterback Chase Edwards threw a screen pass to junior wide receiver Lucas Matta, who followed great blocks downfield and outran the Badgers’ defense en route to a 56-yard touchdown pass to put Granger ahead 17-0.

The Lions would then continue their scoring outburst in the second quarter on a two-yard touchdown run from senior running back Isaac Lizardo and a 12-yard touchdown run from Edwards. Following a sack by sophomore linebacker Kael Jackson and a fumble that was recovered by senior defensive lineman Michael Selucky, the Lions got a three-yard touchdown run from sophomore backup quarterback Wyatt Rochner to head into halftime up 37-0.

Late in the second quarter and into the second half, Granger head coach Stephen Brosch was able to get plenty of varsity playing reps for his backups and players called up from the junior varsity squad to play vs. Bruni.

Rochner added a four-yard touchdown run early in the third quarter, while Sifuentes had a 42-yard touchdown run that had him break several tackles to give Granger a 50-8 lead.

The Lions coasted the rest of the way but still got Sifuentes’ third touchdown run of the night from 17 yards out in the fourth quarter as he finished the evening with 10 carries for 113 yards.

Granger junior linebacker Jett Jolly led the way with eight tackles and one sack, sophomore cornerback Caden Carpenter had an interception, while sophomore defensive lineman Chase Selucky also added a sack on defense.

Now with a 4-1 overall record at the conclusion of non-district play, the Lions will have a week off from action before returning at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 6 for the 2A-2 District 13 opener vs. Iola High School as Granger celebrates Homecoming.
