Hippos drop Homecoming heartbreaker
HUTTO – The Hutto High School varsity football team returned to Hutto Memorial Stadium for the first time in almost a month as the Hippos hosted Midway High School of Waco for its annual Homecoming game in front of a packed crowd. Unfortunately, the Hippos came up just short in a heartbreaking 45-42 loss at the hands of the visiting Panthers.
Hutto got off to a very quick start offensively as senior standout quarterback Will Hammond marched the offense downfield in a heartbeat. A successful first drive was capped off by a 32yard touchdown run by junior wide receiver Braeton Anderson as the Hippos quickly took a 7-0 lead less than one minute into the game.
With a 7-3 lead heading into the second quarter, Hammond again drove the offense downfield and concluded a drive with points as sophomore running back Keilan Chavies ran it in from a few yards out to put Hutto up 14-3 early in the second quarter.
After Midway got to within 14-10, Hutto had a couple more scoring plays in the first half as this team continued to roll.
Senior running back Dennis Benavides caught a screen pass from Hammond and scored from 33 yards out, while later in the quarter Hammond threw an eight-yard touchdown pass to senior wide receiver (and Homecoming king) Alex Green as Hutto was up 27-10.
