Kid Fish grabs ‘em hook, line and sinker

An event designed to reel children into spending time with their parents turned out to be the catch of the day, organizers said. The Taylor Parks and Recreation Department hosted Kid Fish Sept. 16 during a cool morning at Bull Branch Park.

“The event went great,” said Ian Davis, programming director for the city department. “We were blessed with good weather. About 50 kids showed up and a couple dozen fish were caught.”

Youthful participants came to the park with parents and guardians, which allowed families to spend quality time outdoors, organizers said.

Some of the children caught their first fish ever during the event.

In addition, Kid Fish allowed the youngsters to compete, which meant the angler who caught the biggest lunker claimed bragging rights as the winner.

Trophies were given to the victors in the 6-years-old-andunder category, the 7-11 category and the 12-16 category.

Kids fished for free and poles were provided, thanks to a donation from Atmos Energy, Davis said.

The natural-gas distributor with a location in Round Rock also paid for snacks and bait.

“We’re trying to make as many of our parks and rec programs as accessible as possible,” Davis said of the no-cost fishing fun.

This is the first year Taylor has had a programs coordinator for parks and recreation.

Davis said he has increased the opportunities and events the department puts on for residents.

For instance, the Good Life 5K run will be held at the same park in October.

“We have a great park system,” Davis said. “We’re just trying to activate those parks and host as many events as possible to provide additional quality of life for our residents.”
