AUSTIN — Fletcher Adams, a S&D Plumbing apprentice and Taylor High School student, participated in an unique opportunity this week.
He was extended an invitation to participate in a film produced by Make It Movement in Austin, a nonprofit organization dedicated to engaging high school students and introducing them to career paths where education and skills training lead to greater income opportunities.
“We’re immensely grateful for the opportunity to guide and mentor young talents like Fletcher Adams in our pre-apprenticeship program at Taylor ISD,” said Sam Dowdy Sr., owner and operator of S&D Plumbing.
Make It Movement emphasizes the value of education and training attainable through community colleges, technical schools and apprenticeship programs like the one Adams participates in at S&D Plumbing.
Adams’ involvement in this film has the potential to serve as an inspiration to other young individuals, illustrating how they can also embark on a career journey during their high school years.
By connecting high school students to their future careers before graduation, Make It Movement helps them jumpstart their earnings potential.
S&D Plumbing’s mission is to empower the next generation by imparting valuable trades, Dowdy said.
“Fletcher embodies the spirit of this mission,” Dowdy said. “We firmly believe that teaching a trade can break the cycle of poverty for generations. Fletcher’s journey is a testament to the impact we can have, and we couldn’t be prouder of his growth and future success.”
While enrolled in Taylor High School’s plumbing program in partnership with S&D Plumbing, Adams discovered his passion for the trade. During the summer break, he transitioned into a paid apprenticeship role with S&D Plumbing.
Adams continues to work in their paid apprenticeship program today, which collaborates closely with Taylor High School’s work initiative.
“It is such a relief to know what I am doing after graduation and be working towards it already,” Fletcher said. “It’s a great feeling.”
