GRANGER – Following an extremely hard-fought loss last week, the Granger High School varsity football team returned home on Friday night and the Lions handled business with a 35-6 victory vs. Goldthwaite High School.

From start to finish, the Lions were able to control the game against the visiting Eagles. Granger got first-quarter scores on a five-yard touchdown run from senior quarterback Chase Edwards and another on a 22-yard touchdown pass from Edwards to senior tight end Thomas Youngblood.

Edwards found Youngblood again for a 15-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter and added his third touchdown pass of the first half on a 27-yarder to senior wide receiver Isaac Lizardo as the Lions led 27-0 at halftime.

The Lions added one more score in the third quarter on a 60-yard touchdown pass from Edwards to junior wide receiver Jose Valverde to put the game completely out of reach.

On the evening, Edwards threw for 221 yards on 15-of-21 passing attempts for four touchdowns. He also rushed for 41 yards and one score on the ground.

Goldthwaite managed to get on the board late in the fourth quarter to prevent a Granger shutout as the Lions’ defense was again very good for a vast majority of the night.

Granger managed to take the ball away three times from Goldthwaite as Edwards, Youngblood and senior corner back Trae Herrera all had interceptions on defense.

The Lions will be back in action at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 21 as Granger takes on Bruni High School. The game will be played at neutral site Kenedy High School.
