S&D Plumbing, a local plumbing company, recently concluded its “Oldest Water Heater” contest. The contest which sought entries from residents showcasing their aging water heaters.

The winner was a natural gas Reliance water heater that had been serving faithfully for a staggering 32 years. The owner, Margaret Borden, a longtime Austinite, has maintained her water heater in excellent condition over the decades.

“I never imagined my water heater would win me a contest,” Borden said.

A well-maintained water heater can last for decades, ensuring homeowners get the best value for their investment.

“We launched the Oldest Water Heater Contest to celebrate the longevity of water heaters and to understand how they’ve been maintained over the years,” said Rhonda Dowdy, CEO of S&D Plumbing.

“We were amazed by the submissions and the stories behind each entry. Margaret’s 32-year-old water heater is a testament to the resilience of such appliances and the care that homeowners provide.”

The contest has not only highlighted the importance of quality appliances, but also the significance of regular maintenance, timely repairs and periodic checks.

“It’s (the water heater) been serving me faithfully for many years, and I’m grateful to S&D Plumbing for recognizing it,” Borden said. “It’s a fun and original way to bring the community together and raise awareness about the importance of regular water heater maintenance.”

To celebrate this inaugural contest, Borden received a brand new 40-gallon natural gas Rheem water heater courtesy of S&D Plumbing.
