Rams ready to revive Homecoming

Last Friday’s night game was the first loss of the season for the St. Mary’s Catholic School varsity football team as the Rams look to rebound from their 64-18 defeat at home to Bellville Faith Academy.

The Rams (2-1) will be at home at 7 p.m. on Sept. 15 for their fourth contest in a row as St. Mary’s hosts Arlington St. Paul’s Prep for its Homecoming game.

Although the Rams got off to a slow start in the first half against Faith Academy, the offense gradually got going for St. Mary’s as junior quarterback Kolbe Barta threw for 183 yards and three touchdowns through the air.

For the third week in a row, Rams senior tight end Brady Altman caught at least two touchdown passes as he finished the game vs. Faith Academy with three receptions for 83 yards and two scores on the night. Barta also threw a 21-yard touchdown pass to junior running back Tyler Zimmerhanzel, who also carried the ball 18 times for 66 yards last Friday.

In order to find success this week against St. Paul’s Prep, the Rams need to continue to feed carries to their running back trio of Zimmerhanzel, sophomore Steven Reyes and junior Ethan Lively. Six-man mania often involves very high-scoring games across Texas, so a turnover or two and some key defensive stops by St. Mary’s would work wonders for this Rams team against the visiting Lions.

Prior to the football game against Arlington St. Paul’s Prep Friday, St. Mary’s will crown its first Homecoming Queen in decades and first ever Homecoming King at 6:30 p.m. Additionally, the school will host a “Meet the Rams” event before the game kicks off. Every athlete from fifth through 12th grade will be recognized.
