HUTTO – The Hutto High School varsity volleyball team started off District 12-6A play on a very high note last Friday as the Lady Hippos convincingly defeated Bryan High School in three straight sets in the district opener for both teams.
Against the visiting Lady Vikings, the Lady Hippos got off to a very fast start and won the first set 25-15, dominated the second set 25-10 and held on in a back-and-forth affair to win the third set by a score of 26-24.
Hutto senior Hailey Bartley had an outstanding match vs. Bryan as she had a match-high 12 kills with fellow senior Andreani Garcia adding eight kills of her own. Lady Hippos junior Isabella Orton, who is committed to playing volleyball collegiately at Auburn University, was all over the court as she had 10 digs and five kills on the night.
Under first-year head coach Jessica Martinez, the Lady Hippos continue to string victories together and are expected to compete for a district championship with this talented squad.
“With district play officially underway, the girls are more determined than ever to come out on top to earn a district championship and make a successful playoff run,” Martinez said.
“To make this a reality, they must stay resilient, maintaining their mental toughness and composure under pressure.
Additionally, effective communication and teamwork will be essential in securing the district championship.”
Following a district home match on Tuesday vs. Harker Heights High School, the Lady Hippos will hit the road at 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 15 against Pflugerville Weiss High School in a pivotal district match that will certainly determine future playoff positioning.
