CIBOLO – After last week’s high-scoring affair, the Hutto Hippos were unable to keep up with the No. 15 ranked Cibolo Steele Knights. Hutto fell 57-27 on the road to Steele.
In the first quarter, the Knights grabbed an early lead and never looked back. A 52-yard pass from quarterback Dominic Warner to Royal Capell, followed by a two-point conversion run from Cappell put the Knights up 8-0.
On the ensuing kick-off, the Hippos only moved the ball eight yards before punting the ball back to Steele.
With seven minutes left in the first, Jonathan Hatton Jr. rushed for another Steele touchdown to push the lead to 14-0. The PAT gave Steele a comfortable 15-point lead.
The Knights would go on to score two more touchdowns and PATs in the first to take a 29-0 lead into the second quarter.
Steele was able to extend their lead to 57-0 with just under a minute to play, when the Hippos’ quarterback Will Hammond threw a 16-yard pass for a touchdown. A failed two-point conversion put the score at 57-6 heading into the half.
In the third quarter, Hammond used his wheels to find the end zone for a 4-yard rushing touchdown to give the Hippos life. The two-point conversion failed again leaving the Hippos trailing 57-12.
The Hippos defense continued to keep Steele off the scoreboard. Hammond found Alex Green for a touchdown, followed by a good PAT to cut the lead to 57-19.
The Knights gave up another touchdown in the fourth on a Dennis Benavides 29-run for the Hippos.
Hutto held the Knights scoreless in the second half, and the score would stand pat at 57-27 to close out the last eight minutes of the game.
Hutto looks to get back in the win column on the road next week against 0-2 Converse Judson.
