JANUARY 2023 – The city publishes a report showing road maintenance will cost approximately $1.4 million per year. Only $300,000 was originally budgeted for 2023.

MARCH 2023 – The city publishes results of a survey showing transportation concerns are the top three priorities for residents, with 46.4% of respondents saying maintenance of city streets should receive the highest emphasis from the city.

AUG. 3 – City staff present the fiscal year 2024 city budget, allocating $750,000 for road maintenance. The budget was based on the no new revenue tax rate of $0.402114.

AUG. 17 – City Council votes to approve a $5 charge added to all Hutto utility customers’ monthly bills to pay for the additional funds needed for road maintenance. This would be in addition to the taxes being collected. This was a first reading, with the second scheduled reading scheduled for Aug. 24.

AUG. 24 – City Council voted to potentially approve the budget as presented, based on the no new revenue tax rate ($0.402651), and discussed but did not act on rescinding the potential $5 road maintenance fee.

AUG. 31 – City council voted to increase the potential maximum tax rate to $0.45 per $100 of home value. The highest tax rate the council can approve without voter approval is $0.474107.

SEPT. 21 – Council will hold the first public hearing of the new budget and vote on setting the tax rate. The budget and tax rate, with any changes, will be voted on for final approval Sept. 28. The fate of the $5 fee will also be decided.
