LIBERTY HILL – The Hutto High School varsity football team went blow-for-blow on offense with Liberty Hill High School but came up just short as the Hippos fell on Friday night by an eye-opening score of 82-80 on the road to the Panthers.

According to Dave Campbell’s Texas Football managing editor Greg Tepper, this was the highest-scoring 11-man football game since 2016 as the teams combined for a staggering 162 points on the night.

Hutto standout quarterback and Texas Tech University commit Will Hammond was responsible for a whopping 10 touchdowns but the Hippos’ defense simply had no answer for Liberty Hill’s run-heavy Slot-T offense as the Panthers ran wild all night.

The Hippos, who trailed by as many as 19 points late in the second quarter, battled back all night but were unable to take the lead in the second half. Hutto got to within 82-80 in the final minute of regulation but was unable to recover the onside kick.

Trending sports reporter Caleb Yum of the Austin American-Statesman stated on X that the Panthers’ running back duo of Ben Carter and Noah Long combined for just under 700 rushing yards and nine touchdowns to lead Liberty Hill to a thrilling victory.

Due to this contest going so late into the night and conflicting with Taylor Press deadlines, more details on this historic offensive game will be available in the next sports section.

Hutto (1-1) will look to bounce back at 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 8 as the Hippos will remain on the road against Cibolo Steele High School.
