Rams football wallops Wilco Home School

There was a lot of scoring in a short amount of time on Saturday morning as the St. Mary’s Catholic School varsity football team cruised to a dominant 56-8 victory at Taylor Memorial Field over Williamson County Home School in the sixman football opener for both teams. The Rams hosted the Falcons and got things going right away on offense as they drove down the field and scored on a short rushing touchdown by junior running back Tyler Zimmerhanzel.

St. Mary’s wasted no time getting the ball right back on offense as senior linebacker Brady Altman made a leaping interception. The Rams would then get two rushing touchdowns on two straight drives from junior running back Ethan Lively to take a 20-0 lead in the first quarter.

After the Falcons would get their first and only touchdown, the Rams still had a 20-8 lead heading into the second quarter and St Mary’s only picked it up after that.

Following another short touchdown run by Zimmerhanzel, the Rams got the ball back immediately on offense when junior Kolbe Barta recovered his own onside kick. Barta then threw a touchdown pass to Altman to increase the lead to 34-8 with 5:34 left in the second quarter.

Lively would go on to score his third rushing touchdown of the day on a 30-yard scamper and then Barta found Altman again for a passing touchdown as time expired in the quarter with St. Mary’s up 50-8 heading into halftime.

The Rams would go on to seal the deal early in the third quarter to secure the mercy-rule victory on Zimmerhanzel’s third touchdown run to win the game 56-8.

St. Mary’s will host Round Rock Concordia High School at 7 p.m. this Friday night in the second of four straight home games for the Rams to open the season.
