HUTTO – The Hippos varsity football team started off the 2023 season with an offensive masterpiece as Hutto High School routed San Marcos High School 66-35 at Hutto Memorial Stadium. Now this squad is ready to hit the road at 7 p.m. on Friday night as the Hippos look to keep things rolling at Liberty Hill High School.

Hutto is coming off a magnificent offensive performance that was led by senior standout quarterback Will Hammond. Named as the Quarterback of the Week by Dave Campbell’s Texas Football for Week 1, Hammond had himself a stellar game with a whopping 410 yards passing on 17-of-23 attempts for six touchdowns through the air with 100 yards on seven carries and one rushing score.

Hammond was able to get the ball to his talented support cast with senior wide receiver Alex Green hauling in five receptions for 201 yards and three scores, while fellow senior wide receiver Carson LaPlante had four catches for 126 yards and one touchdown of his own.

In his first varsity start at running back, sophomore Keilan Chavies also had a great night as he rushed for 133 yards on just 11 carries for two scores on the ground.

Hutto is going to need to be able to stop Liberty Hill from getting its run-heavy Slot-T offense from controlling the tempo of the game. If the Hippos’ defense is able to rise to the occasion, Hutto should be just fine and start the season 2-0.
