BUDAPEST – Former Taylor High School track and field standout Fred Kerley and the United States 4x100-meter relay team claimed the gold medal on Saturday at the World Athletics Championships in Hungary as Kerley, Noah Lyles, Christian Coleman and Brandon Carnes are now world champions in the event.

Kerley was the second leg of the 4x100 and took the baton from Coleman in Lane 2 and bolted down the track to keep Team USA in the lead over Marcell Jacobs and Team Italy. By the time Carnes took the baton from Kerley, the race was still neck-and-neck. However, Lyles at anchor had an excellent final leg of the race and took the Americans across the line in a world-leading 37.38 seconds.

Lyles had himself an incredible World Championships as he brought home three gold medals: first in the 100-meter, first in the 200-meter and capped off with yet another terrific performance in the 4x100-meter relay.

“This is exactly what I wanted,” Lyles said to NBC Sports. “I mean, it’s very nice to see but when you plan for it and you expect it, it’s kind of hard to be shocked.”

Next up down the road for Fred Kerley and the Americans: the track and field slate at the 2024 Summer Olympics held in Paris.
