AUSTIN – The Hutto High School varsity football team got its first scrimmage of the fall on Thursday night as the Hippos traveled to take on one of the best teams in the state with Vandegrift High School.
The Vipers are currently ranked No. 7 in Dave Campbell’s Texas Football preseason poll for 6A.
Hippos star quarterback Will Hammond will lead the offense for his senior season before going to play football collegiately at Texas Tech University.
Hammond racked up 2763 passing yards and 30 touchdowns through the air while only throwing five interceptions in 2022.
He also helped out in the rushing game for the Hippos as Hammond added 828 rushing yards and nine touchdowns during his junior year.
Hutto will now transition to the 2023 regular season in hopes of chasing a district championship this year beginning with their home opener at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 25 as the Hippos will host San Marcos High School at Hutto Memorial Stadium.
GRANGER LIONS
The preseason is now finished for Granger High School varsity football under head coach Stephen Brosch after the Lions headed north on Thursday night to Frost High School to scrimmage the Polar Bears as well as Dallas First Baptist Academy.
Granger, coming off a stellar 11-3 season in 2022 that saw the program reach the 2A-2 regional finals, will begin its 2023 campaign at 7 p.m. on Aug. 25 as the Lions host Hubbard High School for GYAA Appreciation Night and Mini-Cheer Camp Night.
ST. MARY’S RAMS
The St. Mary’s Catholic School varsity football team under head coach Rick Cobia had one more six-man preseason test on Aug.
18 as the Rams traveled to take on Mount Calm High School.
The Rams, who were originally supposed to open their regular season next Friday night, had the game moved to 10 a.m. on Aug. 26 as St. Mary’s will host Williamson County Home School at Taylor Memorial Field.
