District to purchase land for third high school

HUTTO – As part of the 2023 Bond, voters gave Hutto Independent School District the green light to purchase land for future schools, Assistant Superintendent of Operations Henry Gideon explained in his presentation to the Board of Trustees at their Aug. 10 meeting. HUTTO – As part of the 2023 Bond, voters gave Hutto Independent School District the green light to purchase land for future schools, Assistant Superintendent of Operations Henry Gideon explained in his presentation to the Board of Trustees at their Aug. 10 meeting. In support of that, the district put a contract on 114.883 acres located at 9500 State Highway 130, as the site for a potential third high school.

Construction costs for a third high school were not included in the May 2023 bond.

The district offered $11,741,000 and the appraised land value was determined to be $11,800,000.

As part of the decision on whether to proceed with the purchase, Gideon prepared a mock-up to show that the land could hold a comprehensive high school with 2,600 students, 450,000 square feet of instruction, parking lot, field house, competitive sports fields and practice fields.

He also reported that the land was found to have no evidence of on-site environmental concerns and no effect on any endangered species. Utilities were found to be reasonably available for the site. The district is awaiting a final report from the Texas Historical Commission, but it is not anticipated there will be concerns.

In light of this information, the board gave Gideon approval to schedule a closing date to finalize the land purchase.

The new high school, when built, is expected to serve the fast-growing western part of the district.
