Area football teams are set to take the field on Friday night as Taylor High School, Thrall High School and Granger High School all have preseason scrimmages. St. Mary’s Catholic School scrimmages on Saturday morning, while Hutto High School will be able to have full-contact practice as a large school that day.
TAYLOR DUCKS
Ducks head coach Earven Flowers preached consistency to his players over the week and it will be very interesting to see how Taylor starts off the preseason Friday night at home vs. Cameron Yoe High School. There will be plenty to watch for with senior quarterback Joshua Mikulencak at the helm of the offense, a terrific offensive line that returns all five starters from last year, a dynamic running back in junior Andrias Fisher and a defense that has a ton of playmakers.
THRALL TIGERS
Originally supposed to be a scrimmage on the road in Austin on Saturday, the Tigers changed to a home scrimmage Friday hosting Brentwood Christian School. Thrall head coach Aaron Vanecek will then have his boys ready to travel to Milano on Aug. 17 for the team’s second scrimmage before opening the regular season at 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 25 away against Somerville High School.
GRANGER LIONS
The Lions are going to have two road scrimmages this preseason on Aug. 11 at Dawson High School and Aug. 17 at Frost High School. Granger, led by fourth-year head coach Stephen Brosch, has gone 30-7 over the last three seasons and opens its 2023 campaign at 7 p.m. on Aug. 25 hosting Hubbard High School.
ST. MARY’S RAMS
The Rams’ third season under head coach Rick Cobia following a span of five decades without football at St.
Mary’s is gearing up to be a great one. This team will get its first sixman action of the preseason as the Rams host McDade High School for a scrimmage Saturday morning at Memorial Field in Taylor.
Unfortunately due to a conflicting press time set for Friday afternoons at the Taylor Press, updates for football scrimmages on Aug.
11-12 will not be in the sports section until the next issue of the newspaper.
HUTTO HIPPOS
Under head coach Will Compton, the Hippos are in search of a district championship title with a highly talented offense led by standout senior quarterback and Texas Tech University commit Will Hammond. Although under UIL rules Hutto can’t have full-contact practice until Aug. 12, this squad will be ready as the Hippos prepare for their scrimmage at 7 p.m. on Aug. 17 at Austin Vandegrift High School.
