Many people believe sports brings people together, the members of the Taylor Area Tennis Association proved it.

Last week, TAT partnered with Samsung, Taylor Independent School District and the city of Taylor for the inaugural Building Friendships and Having Fun tournament at Murphy Park.

Samsung sponsored a meal of chicken tenders and pizza, along with $50 gift cards for the tennis team.

“Tennis is a wonderful sport, and it’s a quite expensive sport, said Marcus Reese, president of TATA. “For us to be able to partner and have kids for two days not worry about equipment, instruction, cost, food thanks to Taylor ISD, it was unbelievable. I went home with my heart full.”

At the July 27 Taylor City Council meeting, Reese presented a $1,000 donation to the city to help maintain the tennis courts.

“I’m grateful to be here tonight on behalf of my entire board to make this contribution to the Parks and Recreation department,” he said. “I think the Murphy Park tennis center is one of the nicest tennis facilities in the state and yes I’m very aware that I could be slightly biased. Part of our mission is to promote tennis to the community, and that wouldn’t be possible without a functional facility.”

Every month a portion of the tennis leagues and programming go into a fund specifically to help the city maintain the courts.

There was a large turnout at Murphy Park for the Building Friendships and Having Fun tennis tournament July 26.
