CCO tours school, presents state of the city

COUPLAND CIVIC ORGANIZATION

For its Jan. 31 meeting, the Coupland Civic Organization (CCO) was treated to a tour of the new and renovated Coupland school facilities hosted by Superintendent Tammy Brinkman. Organization members thanked Brinkman for showing residents the wonderful new building and the renovated old facilities. While looking at the new regulation size gym, members were able to see the Coupland Cowboys basketball team defeat Gause.

The February meeting of the CCO will feature state of the city reports from Coupland Mayor Jack Piper, CCO President Susan Schmidt, CCO Treasurer Mike Schneider and Coupland Volunteer Fire Department Assistant Chief John Roulston-Bates.

The meeting will be Monday, Feb. 28, in the Fellowship Hall of St. Peter’s Church. Come at 6:30 p.m. for a soup supper with homemade soup, cornbread, and dessert; the program begins at 7 p.m.

COUPLAND SCHOOL

Coupland schools held its Valentine’s Day parties Feb. 14 and the middle school dance Feb. 18.

Spring picture day and class picture day will be March 1. On March 3, an open house will be held at 6:30 p.m. March 14 through March 18 will be a student/staff holiday for Spring Break.

GROUNDBREAKING FOR STREET REPAIR

Coupland Mayor Pro Tem Barbara Piper said, “The much-anticipated ground-breaking celebration for the Muery/ South Broad Road project renovation, hosted by Pct. 4 Commissioner Russ Boles, was held on Feb. 7.”

There will be a complete renovation of Muery and South Broad Streets. Work will include widening of South Broad, drainage work, and resurfacing. This project was made possible by the 2019 Williamson County Bond Project. The work is scheduled to be finished by summer.

COUPLAND VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT (CVFD)

Coupland Volunteer Fire Department will be holding its 43rd Annual Chili Supper fundraiser Saturday, Feb. 26, starting at 5 p.m. and lasting until the chili is all gone.

Assistant Fire Chief John Roulston-Bates says, “For a second year we’ll be operating as a drive-through, to ensure we can still have this event that means so much to us, but safely. As usual we’ll be serving chili in mild, moderate, or hot, along with dessert.”

Everything is offered for donations. The chili supper is the major fundraiser for the CVFD and is a popular event for the community.

ST. PETER’S CHURCH OF COUPLAND

St. Peter’s members said, “Thank you Van for everything, to Van Herd,” who has been interim pianist for several months and is now leaving. The church welcomes new Music Director Anna Harbuck who took up her new post on Feb. 20. Harbuck is an experienced choral director and music teacher with a 13-year career. She holds a Bachelor of Music Summa Cum Laude and a Masters of Music from Stephen F Austin. She has taught early childhood through university classes, including choir, music theory, instruments and piano.

She hopes not only to revive the adult choir, but also to add a children’s choir and to revive the chimes choir. St. Peter’s is looking for new members for the choir, and even if you have never sung in a choir before, St. Peter’s says, “Our new Music Director Anna Harbuck is willing to work with you!”

Again, this year, St. Peter’s is serving a Soup Supper at 6 p.m. followed by Lenten Service at 7 p.m. each Wednesday during Lent, which begins on Wednesday, March 2. The sign-up sheet for volunteers to prepare soup is in the narthex.

The next Senior Citizens Luncheon will be on March 15 at 11:30 a.m.

Co-Chair Lois Schmidt reports, “Coupland’s Master Chef Peter Wabbel will be hosting the main meal. The LIFT Ladies will be doing the dessert. Come and enjoy this delicious lunch! Also, we’ll be playing Bingo, so bring a prize $10 or under. Plus, we’ll be playing ‘42’ Dominoes.”

Every Tuesday at 9:30 a.m., the Coffee Connections gathering takes place in the conference room. Also in the conference room on Tuesdays is the Confirmation Class from 5 to 6 p.m.

Interim Pastor Charles Stark welcomes all community members to services at 10:15 a.m. on Sunday. There is a potluck lunch after services on the fourth Sunday of each month. For more information, see www.CouplandChurch. org or email StPetersCoupland@ gmail.com.

NEW SWEDEN CHURCH

Barbara Carisalez reports, “Our Easter Services begin with Ash Wednesday, March 2, at 7 p.m. Then each Wednesday through Lent there will be a Lenten Service with a meal served at 6 p.m. and the service at 7 p.m.”

Palm Sunday will be April 10 at 10:30 a.m., and Maundy Thursday with Holy Communion will be April 14 at 7 p.m. Good Friday service is at 7 p.m. Easter Sunrise service is April 17 at 7:30 a.m. at the cemetery. Breakfast in the Parish Hall is at 8:30, and the children’s Easter egg hunt is at 9:30 a.m. Easter worship service with Holy Communion is at 10:30 a.m. The front of the church will be decorated with Easter Lilies.

New Sweden Church holds adult Sunday school at 9:15 a.m., and children’s Sunday school at 9:30 a.m. Regarding the Bible Study groups, Carisalez says, “The ladies’ Bible Study is the first Thursday evening at 6:30 p.m. and then the second and fourth Tuesday mornings at 10 a.m.” The monthly potluck is on the fourth Sunday after worship service at 11:45 a.m. Game nights are the second and third Thursdays with cards and dominoes. The Swedish Interest Group meets the first Monday of the month at 12:30 p.m. in the Parish Hall.

TYPE CHURCH

There is a new bible study starting Wednesday, March 2, at Type Church.

Pastor Terry Kennedy says, “We’ll start with prayer at 5:30 and begin the study at 6. This study is open to everyone. If you’re interested text or call me so I can order you a book--512-599-7761. See y’all there.”

The course is “Wisdom That Counts: Studies from the Book of Proverbs,” a 12-week series about practical Biblical principles for constructive living.

Worship services are at 10:30 a.m. every Sunday. There is children’s church, and a nursery. Kennedy says, “Everyone is invited to observe the service of Holy Communion, both children and adults.” Communion is the first Sunday of each month.

Everyone is welcome at Type Church, 1200 County Road 466, about five miles east-southeast of Coupland.

POLOCROSSE OPEN HOUSE

Lone Star Polocrosse Club hosted an open house Sunday, Feb. 20, at 1 p.m. at their field east of Coupland. If you are interested in doing something fun with your horse or are interested in trying out a new sport for you and your family get in touch with Prissy Rumel at [email protected].

Rumel says, “We welcome all! Polocrosse is a family-oriented sport for riders of all levels. All you need is one horse to play.”
