CHORZÓW, POLAND – Taylor’s own Fred Kerley went up against some fierce competition on Sunday, July 16 as the star sprinter competed in the men’s 100-meter dash at the Silesia Diamond League.

Against a very strong field, the reigning 100-meter world champion Kerley was defeated for the first time in 2023 in the event as Akani Simbine of South Africa edged him in a thrilling race with a photo finish to determine the winner.

“I feel good about today’s race,” Kerley said Sunday during an interview with World-Track. “Nothing was missing. I got my job done.”

Simbine was able to beat Kerley by the slightest of margins as the pair finished with times of 9.97 and 9.98 seconds, respectively.

Although Kerley did not get off to a very explosive start, he accelerated and was able to catch up to Simbine and almost won at the finish lin.

“I was not sure getting to the line that I won,” Simbine said. “But then I heard my name. I came in here for the win, so I am most happy. I won against all of them, not only against the World Champion Fred Kerley. I am the first to beat Fred this year. We have a good friendship, a good rivalry. I am very satisfied with my performance and hope to continue my good form.”

Kerley will look to continue to stay sharp as the 2023 World Athletics Championships are just one month away starting Aug. 19 in Budapest, Hungary.
