It took a combined, collaborative effort to save distressed egrets at Murphy Park.

The Taylor Police Department teamed up with the Taylor Fire Department and Taylor Animal Control Thursday, June 29, in a rescue effort that saved the lives of two egrets in the lake.

According to a press release provided by the police department, Officer Wilfredo Arce, Lieutenant Brandon Sanders and Animal Control Supervisor Sandy Perio responded to the 911 call and were the ones who carried out the rescue mission.

The trio launched the rescue effort at the lake in a flat-bottomed boat and discovered three egrets caught in a fishing line left behind by anglers, Taylor PD said.

Two of the egrets were suspended in mid-air near the water level when the trio arrived, due to the fishing line being caught on the power line. Taylor PD says the third egret was found deceased below the surface, partially eaten by turtles.

The rescue team secured and transported the two living egrets back to shore. There, the trio untangled the egrets from the fishing line.

Perio took one of the egrets for treatment to All Things Wild since it had minor injuries, Taylor PD said. The other living egret was released back into the park.
