GRANGER – The Granger High School varsity softball team announced this week that four senior players were honored as Texas Girls Coaches Association all-state selections.
The highest honor went to catcher Mattie Wilkie, who was selected to the 2023 TGCA Legacy Softball Team for 1A-2A-3A4A. Heading into the regional semifinal game against Shiner High School, Wilkie led her team with a whopping 0.474 batting average, 36 hits, 30 runs batted in, 13 stolen bases and four home runs. She was also second on the team in runs scored with 32.
Three Lady Lions were selected as 2023 TGCA Academic All-State players: Gabby Ramirez, Alex Harwell and Natalie Martin.
Ramirez batted 0.288 with 21 hits, 21 runs scored, 16 runs batted in, 11 stolen bases, three triples and two doubles in 2023, while Harwell had 16 hits, 11 runs batted in and eight stolen bases of her own. Harwell also had 41 strikeouts in 36.1 innings pitched with just a 2.31 earned run average.
In addition to being named academic allstate, Martin was also selected earlier in the season as a District 27-2A honorable mention.
Granger softball (22-10 overall record) had an outstanding 2A playoff run with series wins over Johnson City High School, Leon Jewett High School and Bremond High School before being eliminated by a hardhitting Shiner team in the regional semifinals.
