Juneteenth events begin Saturday, June 17 in Taylor and continue on the actual holiday, June 19.

The Southside Community Engagement will host its second annual Juneteenth celebration Monday, June 19, at Fannie Robinson Park, 206 S Dolan St.

There will be free barbecue and drinks at 1 p.m. along with music from Jabo and the Old Dogs, a Granger and Bartlett area band, playing blues, and country and western music from 5 to 8 p.m.

The SCE is a group of organizers, mostly family, who will add to the event by giving out free backpacks and school supplies to families in need.

Two of the event organizers, mother Roberta Thompson and daughter Teri Williams said they gave away over 100 backpacks with school supplies last year.

Taylor, Elgin and Hutto School District’s sent parents a mandatory school supply list for children. According to Williams, the list specified clear or mesh backpacks only.

The SCE distributed this type of bag around town and allowed people to directly contact them for such supplies.

This year, the organization will discuss the 2023-24 school supply list, and which supplies to provide this year.
