Suspect arrested after shooting at police

Jorge Luis Serna Jr.

A late night incident resulted in an early morning arrested after shots were fired at officers. Police arrested Jorge Luis Serna Jr., 25, of Taylor, around 2:30 a.m. Thursday, June 15.

Serna was arrested and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon against a public servant, a first-degree felony. Serna is in custody in Williamson County Jail with no bond set.

According to Taylor police reports, on June 14 at 10:46 p.m., officers responded to a report of shots fired on Lenora Drive. It was reported that the suspect was walking down Lenora discharging a rifle multiple times.

"When the first officers arrived, he fired at the officers and then ran into a residence," said Taylor Police Chief Henry Fluck.

Fluck said officers heard a single gunshot and the sound of the bullet passing near them.

Only two officers were in Taylor and another was booking a prisoner at Williamson County Jail in Georgetown. Since the suspect shot at officers, police received backup from the Williamson County Sheriff's Office, which included SWAT, Round Rock SWAT, Central Texas Regional SWAT, Hutto Police Department and Texas Department of Public Safety Aviation.

A perimeter was established around the home and residents in the neighborhood were told to shelter in place.

At 2:32 a.m. the suspect exited the house and was arrested without further incident.

Fluck said the department received a similar call in the same area May 19, however, he does not know if the cases are connected.

"I don't know the motivation for firing (in the neighborhood), then firing at police after that," Fluck said. "Very fortunately, no one's been injured."

Police do not know if the suspect was under the influence of any drugs or alcohol during the incident.

"We are going to be executing a search warrant at that residence," Fluck said. "We believe the is a rifle in that house that was used.

Reverse 911 was utilized to advise nearby residences to shelter in place, with police evacuating a few residences as a precaution.

No gunshots were fired by law enforcement during this incident. A police presence is still in the area as the investigation continues, however, there is no longer any threat to the public.
