HUTTO – Just 2.62% of voters showed up to cast a ballot in the run-off election for City Council Place 5, according to uncanvassed results from the Williamson County Elections Administration.
In the race between Dana Wilcott and James Weaver, Wilcott won the seat with 315 votes, 62.87% of the total. Weaver received 186 votes. Of the city’s 19,188 registered voters, 493 turned up at the polls with another nine voting by mail. Ten additional mailed-in ballots were rejected or are pending verification.
“As a veteran, I know (Weaver) has served his county once before and was ready to serve Hutto. I have no doubt he’ll continue to advocate and be active in our community,” Wilcott posted after winning.
The race was marked by civility. Before the election, Wilcott commented on social media that since both she and Weaver are experienced at serving the public, the city would benefit with either of them in council.
The new council member is expected to be sworn into office at 6 p.m. Tuesday, June 20. The ceremony will take place at City Hall, 500 W. Live Oak St. Her first city council meeting will be Thursday, July 6.
“I know Hutto is on the brink of some really positive and exciting times. I know our community is ready for all of their elected officials to roll of their sleeves and be willing to work together for the benefit of our great town,” she said.
Wilcott has lived in Hutto for 12 years and works in education. She holds a bachelor’s degree in communications and public relations and a master’s degree in educational leadership.
She has been a local community advocate for over a decade, serving on several boards and commissions over the years: Hutto Has Heart (now Hutto Resource Center), Hutto Independent School District Strategic Planning Committee, Hutto Women’s Alliance, Hutto’s Big Event, Volunteers in Public Safety and others.
Place 5 is currently held by Krystal Kinsey, who resigned and is serving in a holdover capacity until Wilcott is sworn in.
