Two standout Taylor High School athletes were honored on Tuesday night as boys track and field senior Jarvis Anderson and girls tennis freshman Rylee Michna attended the annual Austin Area High School Sports Awards presented by the Austin American-Statesman.

Anderson was named both the Boys Athlete of the Year and Boys Track and Field Athlete of the Year, while Michna was honored as the Girls Tennis Player of the Year.

“Our community is so proud of both of these athletes,” athletic director Earven Flowers said of Anderson and Michna. “They truly exemplify what it means to be a Taylor Duck.”

At the 4A UIL Track and Field State Championships in May, Anderson was incredible in 4A as Anderson set a conference record in the boys’ 300-meter hurdles with a blistering time of 35.96 seconds to earn a gold medal in the event held in Austin in front of a packed Mike A. Myers Stadium. Anderson also won gold in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 13.64 seconds and his mark of 22’6’’ won him silver in the long jump.

Michna was a stellar newcomer to the varsity tennis scene in 202223 as just a freshman as she won the 4A Girls Singles title at the state tournament in April by going through Chloe O’Connor of Boerne, Bailee Lane of Lindale and Ella Hester of Randall to capture her first state championship in San Antonio.

Although Anderson’s superb career as a Taylor Duck is over after he graduated, his talents will fully be on display on both the football field and track when he suits up for Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches beginning in the fall. Michna still has three full years as a tennis star ahead of her at Taylor and she has plenty more accolades to come.
