Taylor’s own boxer Destiny “Too Sweet” Jones and her trainer David Watson joined Jason Hennington on last week’s edition of Around the Watercooler to talk about her most recent fight back on May 5 for the ABF InterContinental Super Featherweight Title held at Tech Port Arena down in San Antonio.
Jones can now call herself a champion after making very quick work of opponent Brittany Ordonez as she knocked her out just 1:37 into the first round, taking home the title belt back to Taylor to show off at the Taylor Press office.
“When I went into the fight, my first thing was to do what we trained for,” Jones said.
“We worked hard and she just did not belong in the ring with me. So that was my mission. To just take her out.”
Watson echoed his fighter’s words in preparation for this fight and it certainly showed in the ring when Jones knocked out Ordonez.
“It was more about what I told her at the gym,” Watson said. “We trained hard. Because I always say there’s people bigger, stronger, and faster but who can outlast you? So we train for conditioning.
When she got in there, my message to her was to let your opponent know that she doesn’t belong in here with you. You gotta go after her, there’s no sitting back, and you’ve got to take the fight to her.
You’ve got to make her feel uncomfortable and that’s exactly what happened.”
When asked by Hennington how it feels to be the champion, Jones said the whole experience for her has been unreal.
“I’m still in shock,” Jones added with a huge smile. “I’m still like, ‘Wow! I won!’ and it’s an unbelievable feeling. It feels amazing but I’m still shocked.”
Jones is far from finished in terms of her boxing accolades and Hennington emphasized that this will not be her last title. There is always room to get that much better with a more intense training plan.
“In every camp you’ve got to get better, so I always tell her it’s good to get better when you lose but we’ve got to get better when we win,” Watson said. “So what we’ve got to do is there’s things in this fight that we can get better on. So it’s all about improving all the time. I try to make the camps more intense because some of these fights she’s going to go into are going to be big arena fights. There’s going to be a lot of pressure, so put that pressure on in the gym and she’ll be able to handle it in the arena.”
Watson said that his next goal is to get Jones on television because he wants the world to see what his fighter is truly capable of in the ring.
“But now it’s like everything he’s saying is really coming true,” Jones said. “Now I’m looking forward to being on TV! I’m so excited. I perform when that pressure is there.
When I’m in the ring, it shows all the training I’ve trained for in that fight.”
