School is out and summer is upon us. One local organization wants to make sure students have fun in this summer, but keep their minds stimulated.
The Braided Faded Crew will host Sunday Funday the third Sunday of the month in Fannie Robinson Park this summer. The only exception is Sunday, May 28, which is the fourth Sunday of the month.
“We have a lot of surprises, but I don’t want to give them away. You have to come and see,” said Shareeta Fairley, founder of the Braided Faded Crew.
Sunday Funday will incorporate the Crew’s previous summer event Woo Hoo Wednesdays, which was a monthly event where children received packets with activities and books. Once they completed the packet, they returned it for a prize.
Funday will also include a kids’ zone between 2 and 4 p.m., that will feature activities for children.
“You’re going to get a packet with worksheets and library books. They will be age appropriate for the kids,” Fairley said. “I’m going to give you a month’s worth of stuff. Finish that, and when you come back, give it to me and I have a prize for you.”
She said this will not only keep the students academically engaged, it will also help the parents keep the children occupied.
The event is not just for children, there will also be opportunities for adults to have fun as well.
“It’s not just a Sunday where you’re just hanging out in the park, we want you to take something away from it,” Fairley said.
There will be arts and crafts and other activities designed for adults.
In addition to activities, there will be a bounce house for children, kickball and other games available.
“It’s keeping everybody active,” she said. “It’s giving everyone something to do, where you can say, ‘That was a fun Sunday Funday.’” Plans for June, July and August are already being made for the monthly event.
“The main reason we do this is to give people something to do over the summer, and just come together as a community,” Fairley said. “I think we all need that. An opportunity to come together and congregate with each other.”
