Cocktail attire may not be mandatory, but the Taylor Conservation & Heritage Society is inviting the community to get into the year 1910 for an elegant supper in support of historic preservation.
Sponsorships and tickets are still available for the society’s first ever awards celebration from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, June 16, at the Black Sparrow. The event will be held in honor of recently deceased board member Marcella Schoener.
“It was conceived to recognize outstanding contributions to our town’s historic legacy,” said Society President Frances Sorrow. “This award can be granted for a variety of contributions, from building restorations, books, articles, videos, documentaries, etc.”
This year’s honoree will be Taylor native and architect Douglas Moss, who has served on the Taylor Main Street Advisory Board, and is a member of the Taylor Comprehensive Plan Advisory Committee.
The event will feature Black Sparrow owner Shannon Bagent DJing old-time rags from 1910, as well as a classic menu with an updated twist from society member and Chef Peter L’Heureux, who owned a Washington D.C.-based catering company for decades.
“It’s going to be a very sophisticated menu,” Sorrow said.
“There will be eight different dishes … Everything was in a 1910 cookbook, but he has adapted it to modern tastes, and I was so hungry last night when he was going through it, I wished had brought some samples because I was really starving.”
The lineup will include poached salmon dip with fresh vegetables, curried egg salad sandwich quarters, cheese and pecan canapés served in phyllo cups, crab Lorenzo dip with toast points, vichyssoise mini sips, poulet à la reine rillettes, Oreo dirt cake cups, Cracker Jacks and a “Taylor side car” cocktail, which includes cognac, orange liqueur and lemon juice with a splash of pecan liqueur, for a local flair.
“Please join us in congratulating Mr. Moss and enjoy the Taylor side car and the delicious treats from 1910,” Sorrow said. “Cocktail attire is not required, but this is a great chance for women to wear that little black dress.”
Tickets are $40 per person and are available on-line at Eventbrite under “Marcella Schoener Memorial Award Cocktail Reception,” at the door, or by calling 512-365-3363.
In addition, a limited number of sponsorships are still available, including The Milam St., which is $300 and offers three tickets, with $180 being tax deductible, The Broad St. at $200, with $120 being tax deductible, and the Commerce St., with $60 being tax deductible.
