One run is all the Lady Lions needed

MUMFORD – The Granger Lady Lions defeated district rivals Bremond Tigers Thursday, May 11, to advance to the fourth round of the playoffs. It is hard enough to beat a district rival in the regular season, but in playoffs the intensity is raised, but the Lady Lions only needed one run to get it done.

The Lady Lions started the game on defense with junior Payton Filla taking the mound duties. After a leadoff double from the Tigers, the Lady Lions’ defense would shut things down the rest of the game.

Fila delivered two strikeouts before giving up a base hit to the Tigers to move a runner to scoring position. The Lady Lions would get under a fly ball to end the inning.

The Tigers were not going to give the momentum away, and would get three outs after facing three batters to give some push back to the Lady Lions. Going back on defense, the Lady Lions were ready to show their grit and they countered with three outs after facing three batters.

Showing they were not going to back down, the Lady Lions and the Tigers prepped to go to war defensively. The teams would go back and forth for the next four innings as the tension grew.

Both teams knew whoever scored the first run of the game would take all of the momentum for themselves. After giving up a single in the top of the sixth, the Lady Lions grabbed three quick outs to go back on offense ready to send a message.

A leadoff single from Montana Moore got the Lady Lions fired up and they capitalized. A strikeout followed, but the Lady Lions were determined.

Then one of Granger’s most reliable players, Mattie Wilkie stepped up to the plate and does what she does best. Wilkie would smack a ball deep into the outfield to record a double and bring Moore home for the opening score.

The Tigers got the final two outs to end the inning, but the damage was already done. The Lady Lions saw only four more batters to get three outs and effectively end the game.

The Lady Lions now look towards their next series against Shiner coming up May 20 with a time to be determined but the Lady Lions will remain ready for whenever they need to play.
