The Taylor Press and the Taylor Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee are teaming up to celebrate Black History Month with a conversation and a contest.
Black History Month is observed every February in the United States and recognizes, celebrates, and honors the achievements and significance of African Americans in our culture and history.
On Wednesday, Feb. 23, Taylor Press Publisher Jason Hennington will sit down with Taylor High School’s Eliza Ackerman for a live interview on stage at the Texas Beer Company at 6 p.m. They’ll discuss significant events and individuals in Taylor history as well as nationally. Ackerman leads an annual Black History Month celebration at Taylor ISD and is a wellknown figure in the community. The public is invited to attend this event in person or watch the livestream via the Taylor Press Facebook page.
Black History Month contest
Children and teens are invited to participate in Black History Month with an essay writing contest. The theme of the essay is: “What Black History Month means to me, and why it’s important.”
The contest is open to all grades and must be submitted by Feb. 28. There is no word count limit. Participants may turn in their essay at the Taylor Press office at 211 W. Third. Street, or email it to TaylorDEICommittee@ gmail.com.
The first, second, and third place winners will have their essays printed in the Taylor Press.
Black History Month offers both adults and children of all races and backgrounds the opportunity to learn about those who’ve shaped our community.
