ROSEBUD – The Granger Lady Lions have advanced to the third round of the playoffs after defeating the Leon Cougars Friday, May 5.
The Lady Lions gave up the Cougars’ lone run in the first inning and went on to win the game 11-1 in order to advance to the next round.
The Lady Lions were the first team on offense, and after coming away empty, they went out on defense trying to do the same to the Cougars. The Cougars would be luckier than the Lady Lions in this situation and scored the first run of the game.
The Lady Lions’ defense took this personally and shut down the field for the remainder of the game, which allowed their offense a chance to find a groove. Payton Filla and Alex Harwell combined to strike out three batters in five innings of play.
Pitching was a big part of the game for the Lady Lions because hits set up the defense to make easy plays. Their offense eventually found a rhythm and put some runs on the board.
In the third inning, the Lady Lions would finally break through, scoring four runs to take the lead. They added five more runs in the fourth inning to make it 9-1 late in the game.
Mattie Wilkie again had the big bat for the Lady Lions, as she hit the only home run for the Lady Lions. Wilkie also led the game with five RBIs and batted 67%, hitting on two of her three attempts.
The Lady Lions scored two more runs in the fifth inning to make the score 11-1, opening the door to end the game in five innings. Harwell was on the mound, and the defense behind her were focused and ready to end the game and advance.
With the conclusion of the game, the Lady Lions set their sights on their next matchup against Bremond Thursday, May 11, at Mumford High School.
