Taking time for joy and laughter in the classroom

Amber Nunnery is in her fourth year of teaching English in Taylor ISD, sixth year in education. She was inspired to become a teacher by her high school theater teacher, and the way that teacher had of empowering students through storytelling and pushing them to use skills they didn’t know they had. This, along with learning the value of words, effectiveness of stories and importance of critical thought inspired Nunnery to teach English.

Amber Nunnery is in her fourth year of teaching English in Taylor ISD, sixth year in education. She was inspired to become a teacher by her high school theater teacher, and the way that teacher had of empowering students through storytelling and pushing them to use skills they didn’t know they had. This, along with learning the value of words, effectiveness of stories and importance of critical thought inspired Nunnery to teach English.

Her advice for new teachers just entering the profession is to give yourself credit.

“Teaching is challenging, and it’s easy to feel like the work done in a classroom is never enough,” said Nunnery. “Know that you’re doing a good job. Also, take time for joy and laughter in the classroom.”
